This is how to check your current network settings.  The procedure varies depending on your computer's Operating System:

For Windows 2000 or XP
  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Explore
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the left hand pane, then right-click on My Network Places and select Properties.
  3. A new window will pop up and you should see Local Area Connection in the window.  Right-click that connection and, again, select Properties
  4. A separate window should pop up and you should see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).  Double-click that option and you will see your settings.
  5. If you have static (manual) settings, you will see the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway fields filled out.  If you are using DHCP, then Obtain an IP address automatically will be selected.
For Windows 9x
  1. Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel
  2. Double-click on Network Neighborhood
  3. In the window, there should be a white box with "Client for Microsoft Network, TCP/IP..." etc.).  Scroll down until you see TCP/IP followed by a network adapter (Linksys, 3com, D-Link, ...etc.).
  4. Double-click that setting and you will see the network settings.  The Gateway and DNS settings have their own tabs.
