Tray assignments are controlled by a combination of the model in the CU*BASE library, the print session configuration, the Windows driver, and the settings on the printer itself.  Let's break down how each affects it first:
  • Model in library - each model defines the PCL code that CU*BASE appends to the print job for duplex and trays.  If the wrong model is selected, the wrong PCL may be pushed with the print job.  It is also important to have a supported printer, otherwise CU*Answers cannot guarantee print jobs will work correctly.
  • Print session - the print session, in some cases, wraps the print job in additional PCL.  If the print session was built as the wrong model, the print job could wind up with conflicting PCL and confuse the printer.
  • Windows driver - if the Windows driver is not for the correct model, this has obvious implications on all print jobs beyond just CU*BASE.  Ensure that the correct driver for that make/model of printer is installed at all times.
  • Printer settings - the printer itself must have it's trays configured correctly to accept the print jobs without prompts.  In the library, CU*BASE offers options for which tray a type of document should print to (such as a "loan form").  It doesn't specify where each paper size should print to, so the printer needs to be able to determine this on its own.
To correct issues with the tray assignments, it is best to start at the top and work down.
  1. Verify the model of the printer in the library:
    1. Launch Tool #326 "CU Hardware Configuration"
    2. Select "Printers" in the drop down and press Enter
    3. Select the printer that is not printing correctly
    4. The "Model" field at the top needs to be set to the appropriate model
      1. Don't see the correct model in the list?  Ensure you are using a supported printer, then contact CU*Answers Network Services for assistance.
      2. Unsure what model to select?  Contact CU*Answers Network Services for assistance.
    5. Ensure the tray selections beneath are accurate.
      1. To standardize between different manufacturers, CU*BASE uses the following naming standard for trays.  This may not match how the printer is physically labeled, and that is OK.
      2. "M" - this is the manual feed tray, or the "pull down" tray, on the printer.
      3. "1" - this top most drawer on the printer.
      4. "2" - this is the next drawer down
      5. And so on ...
      6. There is no option for envelopes - this is done behind the scenes with nothing to configure
  2. Verify the print session settings:
    1. In this case, it is easiest to rebuild the print session from scratch to ensure all settings are correct
    2. First, close out of the print session if it is signed in
    3. Delete the icon from the desktop
    4. Point your browser to http://updates.cubase.org/
    5. Select your credit union in the list
    6. Click and run the link for "Create GOLD Printer" on the right
    7. Select the correct model in the drop down, enter the printer ID, click OK, then Create
    8. The icon will be recreated on the desktop
    9. Open the printer and assign the correct local printer (How do I do this?)
  3. Verify the Windows print driver:
    1. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer of the printer to install and verify the print driver
    2. If you require assistance, contact CU*Answers Network Services
  4. Verify the settings on the printer itself:
    1. Note - each printer has a slightly different menu system, so refer to the manual for your specific printer model as needed.
    2. The first step is to ensure that each tray is configured for the correct paper size and type:
      1. Navigate to the "Paper Handling" menu on the printer
      2. The manual feed tray should be set to "Any" for the "Type" and "Any" for the "Size."  For CU*BASE to use the manual feed correctly, the settings for it must be Any/Any for all document types (starter checks, envelopes, etc.)
      3. Each drawer with plain letter-sized (8.5"x11") paper should be set to "Plain" for the "Type" and "Letter" for the "Size"
      4. Each drawer with plain legal-sized (8.5"x14") paper should be set to "Plain" for the "Type" and "Legal" for the "Size"
      5. Each drawer with check stock should be set to "Plain" for the "Type" and "Letter" for the "Size"
      6. All other trays should be set to the appropriate paper type and size - however, CU*BASE will only print to the paper sizes/types listed above
    3. Ensure that the tray behavior is set to look for the appropriate tray:
      1. On most printers the tray behavior is configurable.  The printer can be set to only use the tray requested and never look for a better fit, or it can be set to look for a better fit.  If the former is selected, and a letter-size print job is sent to the legal tray on the printer, the printer will stop and being flashing for user intervention.  If the latter is selected, it will say to itself "No, this should go the letter drawer" and automatically send it there.  This is the option to be selected.
      2. On most printers, follow these steps:
        1. Open the "Configure Device" menu
        2. Open the "System Setup" menu
        3. Open the "Tray Behavior" menu
        4. Change the "Use Requested Tray" setting to "First"
      3. If you are unable to locate this same menu, refer to the manual for your printer to locate the setting
