  • 1. Can I set up individual and organizational trusts differently using the Membership Designation codes? Public
    Preview
Yes. In fact, that is the way we are now recommending you configure your codes and set up your member accounts. This not only makes it easier to track the different types of trusts, but more importantly, makes the field labels make more sense for your member service staff. Create a new Membership Designation Code (such as TO ) to be used only for Organizational trust accounts. The label for primary name would be Trust name and the label for joint owner name would be Trustee. Check only  More...

  • 4. Explain how the Secondary Names (SECNAMES) file works to store joint owner names, especially in cases where a membership doesn't really have "joint owners" per se (like a Representative Payee). Public
    Preview
The Secondary Names (SECNAMES) file stores instructions that link a membership account to another member or non-member record. The file stores links to joint owner names and beneficiary names for all non-IRA account types. (IRA beneficiaries are stored in a completely different file because they are linked to an IRA Plan Type, not specific individual sub-accounts.) The file also stores a third type referred to as miscellaneous owner which can be used for any purpose you wish. The most co  More...

In a nutshell, you will set up a Membership Designation Code for Representative Payee, with the label for primary name set to Beneficiary and the label for the joint owner name set to Rep Payee. • 7. I have an organizational membership with a charter date prior to 1900. How can I enter that into CU*BASE? Public
    Preview
The charter date field for organizational accounts (used for birth date on individual memberships) does not support a century other than 19xx or 20xx. We suggest for any charter dates prior to 1900 that you enter 1900, using that as your visual clue to look at either a Tracker or Account Comments, or perhaps even create a custom field to store the actual charter date should you need it for any reason in the future. As a rule charter dates are simply informational and are rarely used by any CU*B  More...
  • 8. What is the best way to set up a trust account on CU*BASE? Public
    Preview
Trust accounts can be set up as either individual or organizational depending on the legal nature of the trust. Following are recommendations for handling situations when a member wants to set up a membership where the primary member and the first joint owner are, in essence, the same person. This happens most often for trust accounts. Currently in CU*BASE there are two ways to handle trusts: For trusts that use a person’s SSN (where you do not have a separate TIN for the trust), set up th  More...

  • 10. Do you have an explanation for members concerning the APYE calculation on their statement? Public

Truth-In-Savings requires certain disclosures on periodic statements. One of the disclosures required on dividend-bearing accounts is the “annual percentage yield earned (APYE)”. The APYE is an annualized rate that reflects the relationship between the amount of dividends actually paid to the member’s account during the period and the average daily balance in the account for that period. *Note - this calculation uses the member’s average daily balance for the period,   More...

There are several steps in removing a member's Social Security number: 1) Run a global search to see what types of relationship codes the SSN has with your credit union. 2) The first relationship codes you will want to review are the 'CB' or 'JI' which mean the non-member is a co-borrower and/or joint owner on the account. They need to be removed first. To remove them, launch Tool #3 Open/Maintian Memberships/Accounts, choose Update member information then Joint owners an  More...
  • 14. Why does CU*Answers charge a monthly fee for running service charge programs we configure ourselves in CU*BASE? Public
    Preview
There are two primary reasons we charge this fee: Our belief that we should do our best to keep our fees down when credit unions do not earn. This is why, for example, It's Me 247 Mobile Web is offered free to our credit unions. It's also behind our constant pressure to reduce fees where CUs have no basis or belief they can charge for a defensive, relationship service. The most important thing to understand is when the bill will be received, not how it will be paid. Payment methods are determined by the relationship between Fiserv and the biller, and are subject to change. When scheduling a payment, the system automatically pre-fills the earliest payment date the biller can receive the payment. The date can be altered to a future date, but not an earlier date. Once a payment begins processing, you will be able to view the payment method in the history. If the   More...
