Previously, credit unions used Code 38 for “Return to Maker”, but this code is no longer available in the system. This change was initiated by a Reg CC change in 2018.

Now, if you are presented with a situation where you need to return a check to another institution, it is recommended that you use one of these codes to clarify the reason for the check return. Some codes allow you to make the change in CU*BASE. Others require that you contact your Check Item Processor.

Read below for details:
  • Not authorized (Code Q). This is used mostly for a remotely created check that the member said they did not authorize. In these instances, contact your Check Item Processor for the return of the check.
  • Fraudulent, altered amount, fictitious signature (Code 40). The bank believes the check is fraudulent (banks usually/should check with customers before returning the check). In these instances, use the code and return the check through Tool #986 CHECKS 1: Work Member Exception File.
  • Endorsement irregular (Code 30). This mean that the signature on the back does not match the person the check is written to. In these instances, use the code and return the check through Tool #986 CHECKS 1: Work Member Exception File.
  • Duplicate presentment. This is used if the check has already cleared. In these instances, contact your Check Item Processor for the return of the check.
  • Signature missing. The signature is missing on the front of the check. In these instances, contact your Check Item Processor for the return of the check.
