If I opened a mortgage loan in February but didn't disburse it until March, what balance will reported in Box 2 of the 1098 form as the beginning balance for the year?
For loans opened during the same tax year, the system uses the end-of-month balance from the same month when the account was opened for the beginning balance reported on form 1098. Since the loan was opened in February but not disbursed during February, that EOM balance will be 0.00, which is what will appear on the 1098 form for that tax year. Remember that CU*BASE does retain balances for every loan for every day of the year, which is why we must use a balance from the end-of-month snapshot. More...

If I use Distribution Code 08 on an ACH distribution record (for a stop payment), will the stop pay order fall off after a transaction has hit the account?
No, CU*BASE cannot automatically remove the 08 Payment Stopped code from an ACH distribution record. ACH stop payments are tricky. Since an ACH stop payment is only valid for a specific payment, the system would have no way to determine which payment it was applicable for as it’s not easily identified by simply using the posting date. Often the information needed is located in other optional fields of the ACH record such as company descriptive date. For instance, if a member is NSF for More...

My member gets a Social Security (SSA) deposit via ACH. We use an ACH distribution to pay the member’s loan payment, but the loan payment was not made. Why did this happen and what benefits are there to using an Automated Funds Transfer (AFT) instead?
Prior to the 16.10 release, the SSA began using multiple Company IDs, and it was recommended that credit unions consider using Automated Funds Transfers (AFTs) to handle distributions. Beginning the 16.10 release a new cross-reference system will be implemented that will automatically funnel all incoming company IDs from the Social Security Administration and treat them as if they came from one, consistent company ID we’re referring to as the “Primary ID.” With the changes ma More...

Will my credit union still review checks that fall out of our guidelines when we move to RDC-IQ as my remote deposit capture (RDC) solution? Currently, for example, we review checks that are over $1,000.
Yes, you can still set restrictions on the immediate release of funds, including setting a maximum check amount. You will build these requirements into your business rules. We will assist you with this during your onboarding process.

How do member phone numbers work as they relate to card orders and maintenance?
CU*BASE uses phone numbers that are stored in the MASTPH file when generating card activation information to send to vendors on initial card orders. The numbers in MASTPH are determined by the label/flag applied in Tool #3 Open/Maintain Memberships/Accounts or Tool #15 Update Membership Information as follows: Nighttime # - primary phone number sent to vendor and defaulting into the Card Activation field when ordering a card. Daytime # - secondary phone number sent to the vendor. Mobile – More...

How do I set up a loan so that the payment is due on the last day of the month, and automatically changes according to the number of days in each month?
When setting up the loan request, enter a First payment date that is the appropriate month-end date. For example, if creating a loan request on August 25, you would specify that the first payment is due on September 30. Then enter a 31 into the Payment day field. This will trigger the system always to use the last day of any given month going forward (31, or 30, or 28 or 29 for February). To adjust this on new loan requests going forward, set the Day of first payment as 31 using Tool #470 Loa More...

Why does the Fee Refunds History by Employee dashboard (Tool #370) return different results when I run it at different times, even for the same date range?
In this tool, you can request which date range to view. For example, in February, you can view Jan 1 through Jan 31. However, if you run this same date range in March, you may see different results. This is because this dashboard requires a MASTER record (an open membership) to display the refunds for that account. If a member received a refund, then subsequently closed their account, the total count of fee refunds are no longer displayed, thus resulting in different counts.

What are the differences between an online ASP and in-house e-document strategy?
The differences ultimately come down to control and cost. The online ASP system is the fastest, simplest, most inexpensive way to get started with an e-documents strategy for your credit union. With online ASP you offload the back-end service management headaches to CU*Answers. We manage, backup, secure, and patch/upgrade the eDOC servers and databases and these processes fall under our SAS 70 and third party security audits. The online ASP system consists of electronic storage of receipts, loan More...

I am running the Selective Loan Information Report (Tool #788) to get a loan trial balance, and I want to use the "Last disbursed" date range to see loans disbursed during a particular month. There are a couple of loans that were disbursed on the last day of that month but they aren't on the report. What is happening?
This has to do with the difference between the business date and activity date on a transaction that occurs around midnight, when the system might still be processing on today's business date but the clock has already moved past midnight to a different activity (system) date. For example, a member uses online banking after midnight on the 1st but we haven't yet done EOD for the 31st, then the last disbursed date on that loan account record will still be recorded as the 1st (the activity More...

Can I have CU*BASE default the applicable delinquent fine code into that field when I am building a new loan request?
Yes. There is an Amortization Default option available in each of your Loan Product Code configurations which allows credit unions to default amortization criteria such as: Delinquency Fine Code, Rate, Payment Frequency, # of Payments etc. The system will then default this value into the applicable fields when creating a new loan request. These defaults are intended to provide consistency for all new loan requests, but can be changed/edited during the loan request process if necessary.

What are the requirements for a "from" email address in CU*BASE? How do I change my "from" email addresses?
Credit union FROM email addresses are closely regulated and monitored within CU*BASE. As a mass email sender, and as an entity that sends on behalf of the network of credit unions, CU*Answers must meet standards of compliance set forth by email service providers, such as Google and Yahoo. Many of these standards rely on our email being delivered to appropriate and accurate member emails, from correctly configured credit union emails. On some of my 1098 tax forms, members who just opened a loan this year are seeing an amount under “Box 2. Outstanding Mortgage Principal” that they don’t understand. Where does this figure come from?
The IRS, which makes changes to tax form layouts almost every year, recently added this new informational box to form 1098 to report the balance on a mortgage account as of January 1 of that same tax year. Each year on January 1 we capture the loan balance on all loan accounts in a special file, and then when tax forms are created at the end of the year we can use that figure. Therefore, for loans that were opened in a prior tax year, this balance is usually easy for members to understand. More...
