We are thinking of activating the new See and Jump features for online banking. Can you explain the thinking behind the security, and why only an account owner can have this access?
IMPORTANT NOTE: When It’s Me 247 was updated in 2021, the “See” option shown on here was made unavailable. There are two major points to consider when thinking about allowing members to see information beyond the account to which they are actually logged in. Both extend beyond online banking to consider a financial institution’s role and responsibility in protecting member private data via all access channels, from the teller line to a back office employee answering More...

If we have configured holds by R&T, if I don't want to place a hold on a particular check can I just leave the R&T number field blank on the Outside Checks screen?
No, the field must be entered if you are calculating holds based on R T number. However, remember that the system will allow you override the number of days to place a hold, and you can even set that to 0 days if you want. (Whenever you enter something manually into the Days field, that always takes precedence over any calculated amount.) So you would enter the R T #, the check amount, 0 days , and the account type (you still need a valid suffix even though the won't really be adding a ho More...

What is the strategy behind how online banking releases are scheduled?
One of the hardest things to do with a 7x24 product like o nline banking and PIB is to decide when to implement software changes. Unlike CU*BASE changes that easily can be coordinated with normal credit union operating hours, o nline b anking changes must work around member usage patterns and support concerns. If a member needs to check a balance or transfer money at 3:00 in the morning, he can’t just pick up the phone and ask a credit union MSR to handle the transaction for him. Because More...

When I print a check, the logo and signature areas are not printing correctly. I am getting garbage characters such as !@#$%&*()abc, etc. Why is this happening and what can I do to correct it?
These symbols print when the printer doesn't know what graphic or font to use for the logo, signature, or MICR line. There are a few possible causes: Is this a new printer? If this is a new printer, the first thing to consider is whether the other printers at the credit union use Check Secure devices. Check Secure devices are no longer sold and are not compatible with new printer hardware. To transition from Check Secure devices to the new software based check printing methods, contact CU More...

Why does CU*Answers charge a monthly fee for running service charge programs we configure ourselves in CU*BASE?
There are two primary reasons we charge this fee: Our belief that we should do our best to keep our fees down when credit unions do not earn. This is why, for example, It's Me 247 mobile web is offered free to our credit unions. It's also behind our constant pressure to reduce fees where CUs have no basis or belief they can charge for a defensive, relationship service. Charging for these services in this manner fund other areas where the direct expenses cannot easily be identified wi More...

If I don't want my staff to use Auto-security, how do I control that?
There is a credit union-level on/off flag where you can disable auto-security as an option for ALL of your employees. To access this, launch Tool #327 Employee Security and use the CU Options button. If auto-security is enabled, anyone can choose to activate it if they wish, either manually by clicking the button at the bottom of the home page, or via their Preferences. As a compromise, if you have some employees who share workstations and therefore need to be able to enter an ID as they acc More...

We sometimes have non-member joint owners that join the credit union, or closed memberships that re-join later on. When I create the membership I choose to copy that old data into the new membership so I don’t have to retype everything. What happens with the phone numbers in those cases?
If you are creating a membership by copying over the data from an existing non-member record (like a joint owner or co-borrower is joining the credit union), the system will copy over all phone numbers tied to that non-member record and attach them to the new membership, then delete the old numbers tied to the non-member (since the non-member record itself also gets deleted at that time). This is not the same when copying from another existing membership , or when copying from a closed membershi More...

Can I flag a member account so their statement is never mailed?
Yes, the Statement Mail Groups feature lets you configure up to 9 codes that can be attached to a member's account. The codes specify whether statements should be printed and archived (the standard method) or just archived only. This is used in situations such as for members with written-off loans or bankruptcy situations where the member shouldn't receive a statement, or even if you want to avoid printing statements for your own staff. Archived statements are available through CU*SPY More...

What is iShield Security?
There are many, many components in the infrastructure that protects your member data, from passwords and daily backups to production redundancy and full-blown DR/BR plans. One important piece of that puzzle involves the protections we put in place to control data moving between the System i and a local workstation. Years ago no one ever imagined an employee popping a thousand member records onto a thumb drive and heading out the door. Today we have entire teams and sophisticated tools to prev More...

How does the Inquiry and Xpress Teller search work when it comes to hyphenated names, or names that end with something like Jr., Sr., II, and III? How does it work with names with an apostrophe in it, such as D'Andra?
In the new search engine, we use a special technique to handle last names that are hyphenated, or where there is a suffix after the name, such as Jr., Sr., II, III, and the like. Here's how it works: Since the search engine can look in so many places based on the Advanced Search settings, there is a behind-the-scenes work file used to organize the data. This work file contains separate fields for the name that's displayed on the screen and the name that's used for sorting. For the n More...

When I reverse an NSF fee for a member, does that change the NSF history statistics as well?
No, those statistics are only updated when the original posting program charges a fee to the member. The idea behind this stats file is to record the member was NSF when the item originally came in, regardless of why. There may be several reasons why you reverse the fee, not all of which would mean the history should be changed. (For example, say the item came in NSF but the member had called and said his paycheck was coming tomorrow, so you gave him a break and reversed the fee. In this cas More...

Xpress Teller activates the drawer automatically. How do you update your totals when you purchase funds from the vault? Where do you update totals for specific denominations? What is the process for balancing?
The only thing different in Xpress Teller is we save you from having to do the following steps: Enter your ID/password Press Drawer Control/Audit (F24) and then Activate (F1). (A “You’re activating at branch...” window appears just on your first time in that day.) Everything else about the teller drawer control is the same, and in fact, both teller systems share the same drawer behind the scenes.

I have tellers that work at two different branches. How do I set them up so that they can activate their drawer and access the correct vault depending on the branch they are working at?
We call this process “Roving Teller.” First give the teller access to the appropriate vaults in their employee profile (see below). Then when the teller activates his or her drawer via Tool #1 Teller Line Posting , the appropriate vault for the branch where the teller is working will be selected automatically. ( Tool #1600 Xpress Teller will do the same thing, but activation is done behind the scenes automatically.) NOTE: If the teller activates their drawer through Tool #33 Tel More...

What are Open and Close Reason Codes, and where is this data stored in CU*BASE?
These are CU-defined codes you can attach at both the membership level, as well as at the individual sub-account level, to indicate the reason why a member joined your credit union, and why they opened certain types of accounts. In addition, you can also configure codes that explain why a member closes a sub-account, or why they leave the credit union entirely. Both are valuable tools for your marketing and member service efforts as you work to respond to why members choose and use your produc More...

I am a loan officer reviewing the application screens with a loan underwriter (at a different computer) and the loan underwriter changes are not being saved. Why is this happening?
It is possible to have two people review the same loan application screen. This is helpful if you would like for two people two review the screens together who are on different workstations. For example, you may have a loan officer and a loan underwriter review the screens together. If you review loan application screens this way, the last person to leave the screen will have their changes saved. Is it true that I don't have to activate my teller drawer with Xpress Teller?
To be precise, you do still need to activate, but Xpress Teller will do it for you automatically, behind the scenes! When you launch Tool #1600 Xpress Teller from the home page, the system will look at the branch on your current workstation, and if you aren't already activated in that drawer, you'll be activated automatically. For security reasons, I like to lock out members from using online banking until they actually want to use it. But with non-use expiration and automatic deactivation features turned on, how do I run any sort of online banking promotion?
If you: A) automatically deactivate online banking access for all new members, and B) expire online banking passwords due to non-use after 90 days, then how do you run an online banking promotion? After all, sending a marketing piece to members won't do any good if they're disabled or locked out from logging in. Of course you could have them call the credit union to get set up, but here's another idea: Set up a special promotional period! Pick a date to start your campaign. Advert More...

How is the data gathered for the new search engine that's used by Member Inquiry and Xpress Teller?

When a search is performed we look at everything in that view and return a result wherever we got a hit in any column or row in that table. If we have a bag full of coin in the coin machine and we take it out, is it best to sell to the Vault directly or leave it with the coin totals?
When you take coin out of a coin machine, it is best to do a transfer from the supplemental vault (Coin machine) directly to the Vault. This will accurately show where the funds are located and make it easier to balance both the vault and the coin machine.
