I have an online credit card loan account where the balance from the previous month end was paid in full by the payment due date, yet the member still incurred a finance charge. Why?
Credit card finance charges can be confusing as they are different from a normal simple daily interest consumer loan, because billing cycles play a part in the finance charge calculation. Both current and previous billing cycles are required for the calculation to qualify for a configured grace period. Grace period flags are determined by the credit union and disclosed in their credit card disclosures. Finance charges are waived if the account qualifies for the grace period configured in the loa More...

What types of analysis should I do regularly with the "Money Movement Analysis" tool?
There are a couple of things a credit union CEO should do with the Money Movement Analysis tool (Tool #536) in CU*BASE: Comparing to last month: The tool is designed to use last month's ending balance to compare to the current date. So one way to use this each and every month is to regularly compare the balance during, say, the third week of each month and see what accounts have had wide swings either up or down, and then act accordingly on a regular basis. For example: On July 20, compare More...

Where do the totals that appear in the Portfolio Analysis - EFT Usage dashboard (Tool #594) come from?
The data for the totals on the EFT Card Portfolio Dashboard are summarized on the second of the month for the previously completed month. For example, on July 2nd we summarize the data from June. How many end-of-month (EOM) files does CU*BASE retain for online clients to access without assistance from operations? I use this especially with dashboards and reports.
CU*BASE retains six end-of-month files for online credit unions to access without assistance from operations. For example, in September, you would be able to access data on not only the current (September) and previous month (August), but you will also be able to run reports on the four prior end-of-month files (April, May, June, and July) as well.

If members receive their one-time passcode for multi-factor authentication (MFA) via a text, how will my CU be charged for that text message?
We currently do not pass along the cost for these text messages. However, starting with April 2025 invoices (sent in early May), your credit union will begin being billed for all text messages related to multi-factor authentication at the same rate as our current text banking fees. CU*Answers clients can refer to the Pricing Guides on our website for current pricing.

When "It's Me 247" online banking is offline for maintenance, what's the rule of thumb for when members will see a splash page explaining what is happening, and when they won't?
The answer depends on which network component is offline. The host in this case refers to the iSeries that runs CU*BASE member files and processes your member data. The online banking server refers to the equipment and programming that runs It's Me 247 online banking itself (there are actually multiple servers). If only the CU*Answers host is offline (online clients) - We can use the online banking servers to display a standard splash page explaining the situation. If for any reason w More...

How do Network Services monthly charges work? Part 1 – Arrears
CU*Answers Network Services (CNS) invoices monthly recurring charges in arrears. What is payment in arrears? As opposed to payment in advance, payment in arrears means paying on a date after the good or service is provided. Some examples are taxes, loans, or payroll. How does this impact my monthly charges from Network Services? Because CNS invoices monthly recurring charges in arrears, services rendered are billed on the following month’s invoice. Is there a way to create a loan that does not require normal payments to be made during a specific time frame (like teachers over the summer)?
There's no automated mechanism, but here's a manual technique you could try: At the start of the summer, reduce the payment and change the interest calc type on the account to be interest-only (via Tool #20 Update Account Information ). Use Tool #51 Miscellaneous Loan Maintenance > Payment changes to schedule a payment change for the normal payment to resume in September. Create tracker reminders to monitor and perform maintenance on these accounts each year. We would of course recom More...

Is there a way to find out what debit card transactions are being processed as "pinless" PIN transactions?
We determine this information one of two ways: Either the vendor sends us a specific indicator for pinless PIN, or If no indicator is available, we look at a combination of fields within the online message from the vendor to make the determination. Currently you can view this data on the Recorded Card Activity detail screen in CU*BASE: Launch Tool #156: ATM/Debit Cards Activity Inquiry (you can also use Tool #11: ATM/Debit Card Maintenance ) Enter an account base Choose a card in the list and More...

I am required to complete a FACT Act policy by July 1, 2010, and the only piece of the policy I am missing is the part where I have to describe the process which ensures there is no duplicate reporting, and basically the process which ensures the integrity of the data. Can you offer any assistance addressing this issue in our policy?
Regarding the FACT Act policy, we can only guarantee or warranty what is input into CU*BASE. We have not seen a standard policy that we are able to provide to you. Our recommendation is that you put a procedure in place where they randomly select a group of loans and do the credit reporting inquiry from the loan inquiry screen to review the accuracy of the reporting.

How does the multi-corp environment handle non-member relationships such as co-borrowers and joint owners?
There is a single database of non-member records that can hold information about co-borrowers, joint owners, and beneficiaries. Each record requires a unique SSN/TIN*, and then the records can be linked to any member account for any purpose. For example, John Smith might belong to one credit union, and his wife, Mary, belongs to another credit union, both within the same multi-corporation environment. If both of them wanted their daughter, Julie (not a credit union member), to be listed as a More...

Historically, you could use our Report Writer to extract this information from the transaction database.
