What causes a member check to be returned as 'Refer to Maker'?
Previously, credit unions used Code 38 for “Return to Maker”, but this code is no longer available in the system. This change was initiated by a Reg CC change in 2018. Now, if you are presented with a situation where you need to return a check to another institution, it is recommended that you use one of these codes to clarify the reason for the check return. Some codes allow you to make the change in CU*BASE. Others require that you contact your Check Item Processor. Read below for More...

My member gets a Social Security (SSA) deposit via ACH. We use an ACH distribution to pay the member’s loan payment, but the loan payment was not made. Why did this happen and what benefits are there to using an Automated Funds Transfer (AFT) instead?
Prior to the 16.10 release, the SSA began using multiple Company IDs, and it was recommended that credit unions consider using Automated Funds Transfers (AFTs) to handle distributions. Beginning the 16.10 release a new cross-reference system will be implemented that will automatically funnel all incoming company IDs from the Social Security Administration and treat them as if they came from one, consistent company ID we’re referring to as the “Primary ID.” With the changes ma More...

A Misc. Receipt Posting code was set up with the "Credit entry location" set to blank, which according to online help means to use the teller branch number. If an active teller posts a MR transaction through Phone Operator, it does not write out to the teller’s branch number. Instead, it writes out to branch 01. Is this how the process should work?
The reason the M/R code is not writing out with the teller's branch number is because it is being done through Phone Operator. Phone Op is actually posting to the member branch regardless of this configuration. The transaction is a bit different than teller because it’s built with a TRANS record with a direct connection to the offset GL rather than a teller audit key with an EOD GL interface for misc receipts. The trans record posts the member branch to both the member and teller bra More...

When looking at the ATM/Debit or Credit Card Activity screen, what does the indicator in the Type and Transaction Description mean?
The fields are related to Process Codes, in that they are derived from the code attached to the message received from the plastics processor (vendor, or switch). The Type you see in the initial Type column of the Activity screen relates directly to the Transaction Description when you view additional transaction details. Transaction types may not apply to all vendors. Examples of these labels are as follows: DEP (Deposit Transactions) ATM/DEP A deposit made at an ATM. ATM/DEP - including a $ More...

I have to print notices for members who have Opted In as part of Reg. E. How can I monitor our members' activation through "It’s Me 247" to know who to send notices to?
Tool # 518 Members Reg. E Opted In/Out/Undecided is a canned Query that will split your membership by those opted In, then opted out, and finally those undecided. Any maintenance performed on the new Opt In/Opt Out flags that are within the membership and sub accounts write out to file MASTRL in FILExx, which can be queried to monitor for activity. We suggest monitoring this daily. Select Records of MTANROPT (Reg E Opt In/Out Flag) equal to ‘I’, and MTANROPTDT (Reg E Opt In/Out E More...

Can I prevent a member who is not a U.S. Citizen from being included in tax forms and reporting to the IRS?
Members who are not U.S. citizens should have the Foreign citizen or Foreign corporation flag checked on their MASTER membership record. This can be done when creating the membership, or by using Tool #15 Update Membership Information (shortcut: umbr) . Memberships flagged this way will not be included in IRS reporting or tax forms processing. NOTE: This is different from the Foreign address flag, which just controls the format of the member's address. This is so that a foreign c More...

We are thinking of activating the new See and Jump features for online banking. Can you explain the thinking behind the security, and why only an account owner can have this access?
IMPORTANT NOTE: When It’s Me 247 was updated in 2021, the “See” option shown on here was made unavailable. There are two major points to consider when thinking about allowing members to see information beyond the account to which they are actually logged in. Both extend beyond online banking to consider a financial institution’s role and responsibility in protecting member private data via all access channels, from the teller line to a back office employee answering More...

If a joint owner of an account is doing a cash transaction over $10,000, when the CTR form pops up it has the primary owner’s information and Social Security number on the form. How can we make sure that the joint owner’s information and SSN pops up on the CTR form instead?
The correct way to fill out the CTR form is for it to show the primary member and then the teller chooses on whose behalf the transaction was being made. Then add the joint owner as the person conducting business on behalf of another.

I recently updated my rate in my loan category (for example updated the prime interest rate), and it is not reflected in the rate that is shown online on my rate board in "It’s Me 247". What should I check first?
Online banking rates don’t automatically update based on changes to loan categories. In order for the rate to be reflected in online banking, you must also update the rate in the Online banking option of Tool #470 Loan Product Configuration . To do this, select to Change the product shown on your rate board and select the Online banking option. While the rate on this screen will reflect the change to the loan category, in order for it to be shown in online banking, you must save this scre More...

Yes! This section can list all of the accounts touched during that particular transaction, or can include all of the sub-accounts under that membership. Why does CU*Answers charge a monthly fee for running service charge programs we configure ourselves in CU*BASE?
There are two primary reasons we charge this fee: Our belief that we should do our best to keep our fees down when credit unions do not earn. This is why, for example, It's Me 247 mobile web is offered free to our credit unions. It's also behind our constant pressure to reduce fees where CUs have no basis or belief they can charge for a defensive, relationship service. Charging for these services in this manner fund other areas where the direct expenses cannot easily be identified wi More...
